Will, great post. However, it seems like a big part of the reason that we don't use research is that we often disagree on what the research really says and how it applies to us in particular situations.

There was a recent debate on a newsgroup around audio narration vs. on-screen text. After much debate, there was some agreement on what the research says, but still a lot of debate about the specific situation. I.e., no one could come in and say definitively that the research says to do X.

I think that #2 is a primary factor in good design not being practised. In that same year, Ruth Clark published "Six Principles of Effective e-Learning: What Works and Why" in the eLearning Guild's Developers Journal. I still don't see these being implemented in many cases:

The multimedia principle;
The contiguity principle;
The modality principle;
The redundancy principle;
The coherence principle; &
The personalization principle.

Interesting insights, Will. I agree we must avoid heavy-handedness in sharing research-based insights. I think people can fall into the trap of sharing from a place of, "look how much I know." With that said, I think more people need to be talking about research and how it applies. It still doesn't seem to be a very loud coversation outside of the campus walls and the occational conference session.

Maybe you need a marching band. smile.
