Hi Will, can you post up your slides?

"the most important reason they came to the conference was so that they could go back and do something better" - maybe, but is that realistic?

They pay for the whole conference, so they are likely attending 10 other sessions in the two days. Thats alot to take in.

If it was a 'learning experience' then I guess 90 mins of spaced activities around a small number of themes with reflection maybe a better format.

If the goal is more of a call to action around a theme and some key points then thats more achievable at conferences.

Hi Will,

I was one of the people who were in the session at the unnamed conference. This session was probably the highlight of the conference for me. I would love a copy of the full presentation.

I agree with the issues of how I now transfer this to my work back in the office. (Speaking of transfer, since printing was $1 a page at this conference, most of us would have printed the handouts at home... what about the transfer of all that paper back & forth and the carbon footprint of all that paper being jetted around twice?

I was also in the session. I was all for the paperless idea, until I got to the conference and realized that there were very few places where I could recharge my netbook. Between that problem and the number of presentations where the slides did not match the downloadable handouts (including my own session, I admit), I found that I took fewer notes than I normally would in these types of session.

Will, great post. My question is however that it does depend on the slides used. If slides are graphical they do not come up well when you print small 3 slides plus notes pages. If slides are text heavy the slides themselves tend to lose learners. For me, I prefer taking notes in notebooks and only adding key points relevant to me - I then like it if actual slides are available to view online so that later I can review my notes and slides. I think this activity really helps embed ideas and knowledge.

Great post Will. If I have the right conference in mind, I was a fellow speaker at that one. I had many concerns about the "paperless" approach -- many of the same things you and commenters have noted here. I tried to argue these points several months *before the conference*, but I was not convincing. I still stand by all the points I made then, as to the very significant negatives of a conference going "paperless", negatives that I think outweight any supposed positives (I say "supposed" because as you note, some of the benefits might be phantoms anyway!)

I sincerely hope that conferences going "paperless" will not be a trend. If it does, I might have to just start violating the rules and supply my own, full, rich handouts until such time as I'm no longer invited to be a speaker. But I gotta do what's in my audience's best interest, you know?

Thanks, Will, this is what I've been looking for
